I picked up the G.M. accessory "SAV-A-BATTERY FILLER CAPS", pictured below, several days ago. On the box is Group number 2.345 / Part Number 1/12 986781. I'm guessing, since there are only three of the caps in the box, that they were intended for 6v batteries and date from the early- to mid-50's, by the style of the box. I checked the part number in my 1929-1957 copy of the Chevrolet Parts Manual, but they aren't listed. My questions are, if I may:

- What years would these be "correct" for?

- What would happen, points-wise, if these were on a car in a judged show?

- How rare are they?

- Why aren't they listed in the Parts Manual?

- Are they "correct" for any G.M. vehicle?

Thanks very much for any assistance you can give me.

Hi Bob,

I'll take a shot at your questions.

Quote
- What years would these be "correct" for?
A: They are listed in both the 1953 and 1954 book.

Quote
- What would happen, points-wise, if these were on a car in a judged show?
A: Accessories can only cost you points, they do not ADD points.

Quote
- How rare are they?
A: Not very, as most owners do not have the correct battery to install them in, therefore everyone has at least one set for display.

Quote
- Why aren't they listed in the Parts Manual?
A: Because they are accessories, they are only listed in the parts book for the applicable year and are listed in the accessories section.

Quote
- Are they "correct" for any G.M. vehicle?
A: Don't really know, but since they are packaged in a Chevrolet box I suspect Chevrolet only. Normally, cross-make accessories are packaged in GM packages.

NOTE: The threads on these devices are made to ***** into the DELCO battery of the period.

They are listed in the 1952 53 &54 parts books. In group 2.345 as the accesory. Was discontinued in 1955 as it no longer would fit 1955 and up.Once an accesory would not "fit" the next model it would be discontinued. Also the dealer could not return them for credit.
Regular parts could be returned for credit for many years after the model was produced. The amount you could return was based on a percentage of your purchases. In the '50s it was 2% the raised to 4%.The parts would be returned to the warehouses that they were stocked in.The real "old" stuf went to the local warehouse and was scrapped.I would back the truck up to a big dumpster and all the parts would be thrown in and scrapped---to see that today would be enough to make you cry.
