Hello All "Tuneup& 6 volt systems people with great tech advice:
Here is a good one for you!!
I have a 1947 Chevrolet that is 90% stock. The 10% is a 1961 235 automatic trans engine,like the car is '47 ie-3 speed trans,closed drive& all.
My question is in the last 2500+ miles about at 350 to 400 miles the car starts to run very bad-backfiring through the carb,it warms up no back but no power-it will not take the gas,but slowly. When I replace the Condenser the car goes back to running fine(NO timing or point set change) at 50,60 &70mph.
Your worst guess could the BEST
Thank you for -I know the correct advice.

Have you checked the heat riser? Also curious if you are running 6 volt or 12.

Hello m006840 et all: The '47 is all off the show room floor except the 235 L6 with the correct 6 Volt system.
Go to your parts systems and the condenser, are listed for 6 volt and 12 volt are the same from maybe ,38 --,62.
I know that this is a easy fix-and all you guys know the fix to this situation.
I even got one of those ELC from PAC--and it stopped working after 150 mi.
Hello you ELC ENG (ret or not) give me a clue
AGAIN thank you for advice and help

The condenser covers 6 and 12 volt from 1934 to mid 1970's.

Just a thought. Is your vacuum advance working. My 1954 235 would not accelerate except for very slowly due to a non working vacuum advance. When you accelerate/ rev the engine distributor should move/rotate counter clockwise.

I am curious if you have disassembled any of the condensers to see what might be happening with them or if you have tested any of the removed condensers to verify that they are actually bad? I had a similar situation and finally found that I had junk in the gas tank. Every time it sputtered and stalled I would check the points etc. and the time spent allowed some of the junk to settle in the gas filter and the car would start and run fine for a short time and then the problem would repeat itself. I changed the gas filter to a see thru one and it did not take long to see the real problem. My thoughts are that first step is to verify that the condensers are actually bad and if so second to inspect them to see what is actually happening to the insides- shorting on the ends-insulation breaking down-wire connection failure etc. I am sorry you are having the problem but it will be interesting to learn what the cure is. Please keep us informed.

I believe the fuel system is O K-new tank, clean lines, new pump, and filter. I will check and make sure the vacuum advance is working. For dissembling the condensers-if I do I have no idea what to look for to tell a good one from a bad one. Can someone tell/show me how to test for good or bad on or off the car?
Again any advice/suggestions are greaty appreciated!
Thanks

Condensers are not tested very easily or accurately. Even with a specialized meter just for capacitors/condensers, the results have a very large tolerance/range.

When this happens again you can verify like this:

1) Install new condenser.
2) Did problem go away? yes/no
3) If problem went away, test car for a bit and then reinstall the suspected "bad" condenser
4) Did problem come back when "bad" condenser is reinstalled?

This test will help verify that it is truly the condenser causing the problem and that the problem is not being eliminated by time, temp, fuel, etc
