When I pulled the rear main bearing cap to adjust the bearing,
there was no babbitt in the cap. The babbitt looks to be on the crankshaft journal. Is it time for an overhaul?

The main bearings are inserts that have babbitt wear surface on a metal backing. The cap should retain the insert but in your case might not have. If the insert is not damaged and still has a smooth intact babbitt without cracks, crazing or other damage they may be okay to reuse.

FYI: The rods have babbitt poured directly on the metal surface without a metal backing.
