How much water should the cooling system hold. Block and radiator completely dry and it took just less than two gallons to fill it to the top.

My best guess is that you were not running the engine when you added water. The radiator alone hold as about 2 gallons.

You need to run the car at idle so the water pump will try to circulate the water. You want to get all the air out of the block.

Unless maybe you did not drain the block or it is heavily plugged with rust.

Rusty, Thats what I would have thought but the link provided above shows 2 gallons. I had the head off and flushed and scraped all crud out and all was dry when I assembled
