I am thinking of having the top replaced on my 1947 Convertible. The one that is on came from Hampton Coach in the early 90's and the inside has really discolored and seems to becoming really brittle. Does any one know of a reliable source for purchasing an original material type top for these cars. Thanks for any help. Also may be interested in a shop to install it in the PA/MD area.

Not in your area but he worked for Hampton Coach and has been doing top notch work for high end cars etc. https://davidsenautointerior.com/

It won't help with the brittle part... But Andy Jurski had luck with dying the black top on his '51. It came out nice, and if he hadn't told me it was dyed, I'd have never noticed. Not sure if that's do-able on a beige top...
Those accustomed to the finest...find it in Chevrolet. 1953 Belair Convertible 1951 2dr Deluxe Sedan 2015 GMC SLE 4X4

Good idea but I would have to do it inside and out as the inside looks a little worse than the outside.

Hampton Falls N.H. If you follow the link above his contact info is listed on the site. His name is Petter (Peter) Davidsen and I am sure he can give you some expert advice as well as install if desired.

The blue pipping on my grey 41 is faded somewhat. The top is black. The rest of the top is in excellent shape. Can that pipping be be replaced without doing a whole new top? Thanks, Charlie

Charlie, Good news is yes it could be replaced. Bad news is the top would have to come off to get it under the sewing machine foot and then reinstalled. It would not be a major undertaking but time consuming.

Crap! Okay. Hows about I get some blue dye and go over it with that? There's got to be a way to do this. How about I cut the threads holding it on and glue it back on? I"m thinking, I"m thinking. In a worse case serino. what is the price range to have a new top installed. Using the best material, fit and originality, etc. Should just about any upholstery shop be able to get some "Stay-fast" material and, using my old top for a pattern, make and install a new one? Anyone had a new top put on a 41 or whatever, lately? Bes and thanks for any advice or help, Charlie

How faded is it? Aero-303 Protectant can brighten the colour for a long time before needing to be reapplied. I've used it on my RV plasticy things that fade, tires, car plastics and on vinyl house siding that was very faded and it lasts for a couple years in the sun before needing to be reapplied. It gets along with most materials unlike many similar products that can do more harm than good. Might be worth the $10 to try it on your piping and you will find many uses...
