Sometimes the car will not start if in drive but quite often it will start in drive. I looked in the manual but cannot find wiring directions. Anyone have an idea where I can find a diagram.
thanks

Is the switch itself bad? My knowledge is on 54 Chevrolet truck with hydra-matic but I believe it is actually same switch. On the end of the gear shift shaft clamped to steering column under the hood. should look like this. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1950-54-CHEVY-PASSENGER-NEUTRAL-SAFETY-SWITCH-NEW-920/402442088202?hash=item5db36aef0a:g:OD0AAOSwdvlfY8Zp

The switch posted above is like the one on my '53. Mine broke because the bushing toward the end of the selector lever shaft was missing allowing the end of the shaft to flop around. I was finally able to locate a bushing but it was very expensive for a tiny bit of metal. The switch is on the very end of the selector lever shaft under the hood.

Here's the switch & selector lever shaft. The switch is on the end of the shaft. The bushing I referred to is just to the right of the spring.
