Hello Cabboy(Robin); Say, did you find the gauges you said you have that might work but that are not "Cosmetically" very good?? I hope you found them in that I do need a working gauge so the car can be used with out the chance of being harmed. I would appreciate a reasonable reply in hopes I can get my car on the road to do tours& ice cream runs. THANK YOU David BWA: If any one has a temp, gauge for a 1929 Chevrolet -working or not working that the coils MIGHT be usable/rebuildable please lit me know!! use dhouston66.dh@gmail.com 828 645-0649
finally was able to get some pics of the gauge from my '29 I'm needing to replace. If you have anything like this, please email me - dhouston66.dh@gmail.com (preferred) or call 828.645.0649 - david
David, I looked through my stuff and do not have a gauge for you. Since you have a gauge that is cosmetically pretty good, perhaps you should send it to one of the gauge repair guys and have it repaired.
Hello Mike: Do you know any person/repair shop that does this type of gauge? If you do not maybe someone on this forum will send the right direction. Thank you for your time in looking your stash. David
See page 34 of the August 2014 G&D for part 1 of a detailed article on how this one-year-only temperature gauge and sender works. The coil probably has a break in the wire an inch or two from the end. A experienced instrument repair person should have no trouble fixing that. See page 36 of the September 2014 G&D. Good luck!
If you find someone who does this repair, could you pass it on. I researched on mine and was told by a speedometer repair shop, whose name I can't recall, that was basically an impossible task or not very probable to be able to repair.
Don't let a day go by that you don't attempt to learn something new.
Hello Fellow club members AND others that use this forum !!I still need this Temp gauge. I do NOT like to drive an older car with out watching the engine temp. I know that there is one or more of you Chevrolet people out there that have an extra on the shealf that you can send me---YOUR wife said for you to do that cause it is colicting dust. Thank you for helping me out David(POPS) dhouston66,dh@gmail.com --OR-- 828 645-0649
The tech article describes how to rewind the gauge coils. If yours is truly shot you might try it. Use an ANALOG volt/ohm meter to check the replacement wire resistance. As another solution the service manual lists a bulb type replacement for the 29. It had a longer capillary tube but the rest of it should be identical to a '30. The big question would be how that capillary tube would be routed to the front of the cylinder head. The service manual does not describe that. It would have to avoid the exhaust pipe and manifold. Possibly clear down along the oil pan engine flange, or along the same path as the original sensor wire? Has anyone seen an example of this running year change, or a car that has one in it? When I see 29 parts at the swap meet I usually pick them up unless the seller thinks it is gold plated. Art
