What is the material called and where would I find the material, that surrounds the front windshield glass on my 1928 Chevy Coach? Please see attached picture, you will see that the window is partially cranked up and that there is some highly deteriorated material {rubber?} that the window seals to when the window is fully closed (lowered). Also on the sides of the front windshield of the 3rd picture.
Hi Todd I think the Filling Station has them. Their part number is 70-1163 for the seal set (sides and bottom) Part number 70-16 is the upper seal. Hope that is what you are looking for!
IMHO since your windshield looks original you should also replace it with "safety" glass. The original plate glass if hit by a rock or a body in an accident can break into very long daggers and is as sharp as well... broken glass. There was a reason safety glass came out in 1932 and it has a plastic film between the two panels of glass to help it be much safer. No judging class points are deducted for such an improvement. While you are doing everything else now is the time. Art
Great advice on the safety glass, I was considering that when the decision was taken out of my hands. Literally! The original windshield fell to the ground on my shop floor and shattered! Nasty, sharp daggers of glass. Now I need to source a new windshield made of safety glass. Is this something an auto glass guy can do locally, or do I need to find a vintage auto glass vendor and have him ship me the glass? ...mind you, that I do not have the original anymore????! So, I will have nothing to pattern after.
If the new windshield seems a little big or the edges are a little rough you can gently sand them to make it a fit a little better. Any type of sander (DA, belt, or pad) will work. Use maybe 220 paper and let the sander do the work. Don’t apply too much pressure.
I intend to use modern auto laminated glass in my 38 when I get to that stage and being flat I can get it at my local windscreen shop. Safety glass is good but still breaks into thousands of little pieces that land in any opening it can find. Tony
Hello Tony, I think you are thinking of more modern tempered glass that shatters into a million pieces. "Safety glass" as it was called when invented is the laminated type with the plastic between the two sheets. In the United States tempered glass is actually illegal to use in a windshield application because a rock can shatter it at 50 miles an hour and then it is blown into your face and eyes just when you need them the most. Laminated glass also helps keep the occupants of the car in the car where it was safer. Most modern cars use tempered glass in all the windows except the windshield. Maybe one of the people with a 32 owners manual could post the part of the manual that talks about the windows. I sold the one I had to a fellow with a 32 for $5. Art

Hi Todd, If the windshield is the same size as a 1927 capital coupe, I can make you a template as I have my windshield out now. I took it over to a local glass company and they fixed me up with the safety glass. I can trace it out for you . Just PM me.
