Does anyone know if the NOS GM 5230850 hydraulic valve lifter, listed specifically for 1953 Powerglide 235 engines in the GM parts catalog, work in the later 235 engines?

That number was discontinued in the later years and the 1950-1952 lifter took its place. It is not adviseable to use in a 1954 as a 1953 has a steel camshaft and a 1954 and later a cast iron. Also the internals are different.

Thanks for the info Gene

Have a crap load of these 5230850 lifter and just need to know. Some of them are even sealed in what looks like plastic. Sound like I will have these for a while. Thanks again for the info.
