I know I have seen this come up in the fairly recent past but I couldn't readily find it. I got my 29 coupe running after sitting with no engine for a decade. (Engine part is a long story with a rebuilder gone bad) Anyway it does now run but is smoothest with the choke out about 1/2" to 3/4". I figure to pull off the carb and check the obvious float level, and anything else that may be easily seen. My question is - are there any small ports or passageways to check out while I have it apart to insure it is in good condition? I have a new diaphragm in the fuel pump and a FS paper filter added to the outlet. Thanks - Art

Art,
The '29 had different parts than the '30-'31. If they are mixed might be the reason. If you can find the specifications you can check the parts in your carburetor. I would send you copies but am not home.

Thanks Chip, and Ray, yes I would like to safely stop by and do that. The carb was rebuilt about 20 years ago by one of the 2 most common rebuilders of the time. It ran good for quite awhile but has now sat for almost 10 years. I wanted to get it "wet" again before I determined if it needed further attention. I assume now that it is running again that it is some minor debris that has broken loose and plugged something up. Generally these are fairly simple carburetors. Art

The quick fix might work. Take out the idle adjustment screw and give several small squirts of carburetor cleaner into the hole. A bunch of small are far better that a couple of big ones. You are trying to get the cleaner to run down the low speed jet (aka idle tube). If the carburetor is still on the manifold then 8-10 larger (but not too big) squirts in the air inlet. That is to try to dissolve anything in the multijet (aka main jet). If that doesn't solve your problem then taking it apart to clean the jets is warranted.

Sounds like a good place to start. Should I take the bowl off to clean it out and spray carb cleaner in there as well? Art

While you have the idle mixture screw out a blast of air from the workshop compressor before the carb cleaner wont hurt either.
