Do any vendors sell repro 1/4 panel rubber for the leading edge for '49-'50 Special 4 door models? If so, who carries the best? I'm putting together a '50 Fleetline Special 4 door and don't want the stainless chip guards.

No personal experience with them, but heard good things - check out The National Chevy Association which specializes in 1949-54 parts.

I'm referring to the Rubber on the leading edge of the pontoon for the Special models as opposed to the chromed or stainless for the Deluxe models

I had thought about the rubberized stuff that is used to dip tool handles in which is sold in home improvement stores. Brushed on to proper thickness. One would think with all the Special 4 door models out there, some company such as Steele would repop them.

Don't know of anyone selling the rubber gravel shields. I was lucky enough to find someone in VCCA who had some NOS guards for my 51 and hooked me up.

As a suggestion, if enough of your old rubber guards survived, you might contact Steele Rubber in Denver, NC..

They might be able to mold some for you. Won't be cheap but they sell quality rubber. They may be able to vulcanize some onto your original metal backing plates.

Also, National Chevy Assoc in St. Paul, MN (www.49-54nca.com) sells used parts.

Good luck

Also, if you're a VCCA member, contact your tech advisor for 49-50 cars. He may be able to hook you up with someone who has NOS or NROS gravel shields.

BTW--Chevs of the Forties has glue on rubber for the gravel shields. Pt# 4561819 price is $65 a pair. www.chevsoftheforties.com, However these are for 2 drs. Not sure they'd work on 4s.

You might also try contacting Bob Graves in Salisbury, MA. He doesn't do online, but you can find his contact info if you do a member search. Bob has a wide assortment of NOS parts.
Happy hunting.

Rusty--one final thought.

You might contact Steele Rubber (www.steelerubber.com) in Denver, NC and see if they would make some rubber gravel shields for you . They are always looking to introduce new products, but like anything else, their decision would be based on whether they can sell enough to make it worth their while.

Call Chevs of the Forties first, though.

I masked off the area and blasted it with several coats of rubberized undercoating. Not bad from 50 feet!
