I am going to be purchasing a carb kit for a Carter W-1 and have looked at both Chevy's of the 40's and Filling Station. The Filling Station list a regular and a premium. Is the premium worth the extra money?

I think you're going to have to call them. If the pictures on their website are an accurate representation of the parts in the kit, it looks like the regular kit has more parts than the premium kit!! The premium kit doesn't show the accelerator pump spring or the idle adjusting screw or ... The gaskets in the premium kit look like they're supposed to be better quality, but other than that, at first glance, I don't know why you would buy the premium kit. Would be interested if you call The Filling Station what they say the true difference in the kits is.

Perhaps you should consider buying from a business that specializes in servicing these old carburetors?

Mike's Carburetor

The Carburetor Shop

The Filling Station and Chev of the 40's buy from sources such as these.

The premium kit contains more gaskets and a few other small parts, not contained in the regular kit.

Thx! You'd never know it from the photos in their online catalog.

Very true. I think I will spend the extra money to see what is in it(Curiosity killed the cat). The Gentlemen told me he gets requests for them that is the reason he offers them.

The contents of a repair kit for older carburetors such as this are a compromise.

On one side are the components that probably should be in the kit.

On the other side is the selling price based on the components, and what a prospective customer will pay if they do not shop contents, only price.

A few years ago, we removed two what I consider essential parts from our various W-1 kits, as they drove up the price; but I always mention these when a prospective customer calls. These two items are the throttle shaft arm (the one that attaches with the screw) and the L-shaped rod from this arm that operates the pump and metering rod.

Check to see what your carburetor needs, and then order the appropriate kit and (if necessary) additional parts.

Jon.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for jumping in on this thread. I know the value of dealing directly with the experts.
