Using the 1939 Shop Manual I tried to do the removal of the steering gear with the worm gear an shaft. I did everything the book said..6" of wheels off floor etc. but the spring arms were in the way. So I had to take the steering box apart from under the car. First removing the Sector from the box then inside the car removing the worm gear and shaft from the box. Then rotate the box some to get it pass the arm. I'm I missing something? How does the Steering gear box come out with the arm in the way and the Sector and worm gear and shaft still connected to the Steering box..

I was able to remove the box from my '37 up and over the side panel on the engine compartment. I taped a rag to the end of the shaft so it would not damage the seat cover or put any dirt on it. I moved the seat all the way to the rear.

It will be easier with a second person to lightly support and guide the end of the shaft as you move the box forward, up, and away from the engine. I was by myself so I was going back and forth to keep everything in the proper position.

Maybe I am misreading your post. Did you have the pitman arm still attached when you removed the box?

I had to remove the pitman arm to get it pass the spring arm. So you were able to remove the box that way with the pitman arm still attach? Did you have to remove any engine panels that is around the box??

Sorry for the confusion in my post. I did have the pitman arm removed.

Thanks for the picture. If I am viewing it correctly the steering box on your Master Deluxe is in front of the exhaust pipe.

That would be a big difference from my car. I have to assume that this means the steering shaft is longer on your car. The path I used might not work in that situation. I did not remove the side engine panel.

Did you disconnect the exhaust pipe and removed the splash shield? That will give you more room to maneuver things.

I am not familiar with the details of a ”˜39 Master Deluxe. Can you remove the large flat metal part in front of the steering box? Or is that part of the chassis and knee action suspension?

Yea to doing it your way would be a lot of removal of parts. I guess doing it the way we did is the best.. We got it all back together now and it's a lot better. Thanks for your info
