Hello

I have a question about how to find the vincode on a 1946 panelvan. Where is it located on the car, please let me know.

Greetings and välkommen!
Assuming the van is the same as in the USA... lift the hood on the right side of the vehicle and you should see the vin plate low on the side of the cowl, attached with 2 clutch head screws.
If it is a 1946 you can decode the number with this: http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/chevyresto/4649.htm

Yes!!
And your vehicle was built in Kansas City Missouri in February... is a 3/4 ton 3600 series (probably a 3605 with a 125-1/4 inch wheel base... and was the 2093rd built.
I may be wrong, but because the 2nd design 1946 model year (D and P prefixes) didn't appear until May of 1946, your vehicle was probably built in February 1947 as a 1946 model.
Nice vehicle to have! Got any pictures to share?

I thought the VIN number on the pickup would be on the left door post where the hinges bolted. I think plate there will have the serial number.

Seems everyone is focused on the build plate (or whatever it's called correctly called) on the firewall. I don't think that is the VIN plate.

I may be wrong on this but I had a 51 and a 53 pickup and that's where the serial number was.

Now that we have identified the location of the build plate then where is the serial VIN plate?

Best,

Hi Charlie:
We're talking about a 1946 panel van here.
Advance Designs are a different animal and JTJ has indeed found the VIN plate and not a "build plate". That's how we determined in the above post where and when the vehicle was produced, what the nominal tonnage rating was, and the serial number as well. But nothing about paint color.
Just to verify, and decode the number JTJ found, see this:
http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/chevyresto/4649.htm

Hi JTJ:
Do you know anything of the history of your van? How long do you think it has been in Sverige?
It's interesting that a van made out in the middle of the US in Kansas City would find it's way to Sweden.

Hi
Actually nothing, the van is still In USA waiting for shipping.....But i will thank you for the answers, and it is probably a panel 46 built in 47 as you said, beacuse the engine code is for 47.

Hi JTJ
You are supposed to be able to post pictures by clicking on "use full editor" at the bottom of the box while you are posting a reply.
If it doesn't work (and I can't seem to make it work for me anymore either) you will need to contact Peter Gariepy at VCCA Membership Services to help you out. You can find his contact information by clicking on "Contact Us" at the bottom of the page.

To post picture direct on to the forum you need to be a member of VCCA, not only Chatter. Otherwise you will need to save the photos to a hosting site and post a link on the forum.

The link works!
Looks like you have some work ahead of you.
You going custom or stock with it?
The 8 lug wheels say it's either 3/4 ton or 1 ton rated. Probably 3/4 ton by the look of the wheelbase.
That would agree completely with your serial number.

Hi JTJ
I'm not from Sweden, but our family came from a farm near Rölanda kyrka which is near the town of Ed. We still have relatives there and have visited them a couple of times.
We also have close friends in Lund, and my wife did her post doctorate at the Karolinska, where I stayed with her for a short time.

Sorry JTJ,
I don't have that information. But someone else here might.
My suggestion would be to start a new thread either under the 1946-1948 Technical - Post War section... or under the Trucks and Vans Technical - General section and ask that question there.
That way more people will see it and you will be more likely to get an answer.
You might also ask if they were made in all of the Chevrolet factories, or just certain ones.
I'd like to know too!
Ole
