Anyone know where I can get a replacement Steering Worm Gear for my 1939 Master Deluxe? As you can see mine is damaged.

I would use eBay as well as calling the parts suppliers who advertise in the "Parts for Sale" section of the G&D. That is a one year only shaft for only Master Deluxe models

Based on the damage to the worm gear I also expect that the sector shaft needs replaced as well as the bushings and bearings in the box.

You may have to watch Ebay for months for something particular - one search will sometimes be lucky but usually takes some searching for a while...

I have a few 41-48 steering boxes. In the worst case scenario it seems you may be able to make modifications to my years by lengthening their shaft's.

There are two worm gears for sale on ebay. 1938-39 Steering Sector

Good luck, Mike

Having been though this recently with my 38 you best bet is to find a complete used steering box. You can then use the new steering box or use the worm gear. I had issues with a worn worm gear and a nos sector shaft, they would bind up at the end of travel. Luckily i was able to get another used worm gear that worked with my nos sector shaft.

Thanks Mark..They only made one for the 39 Master Deluxe due to the shaft length. The 38 shaft length is a lot shorter.

Hi. Are not the worm gear and sector gears the same. I have these items. You just press off and on the worm gear. I have a new one which is off the shaft. And I have a new sector gear as well. Mark

The worm gear comes with the long shaft. The sector gear (or shaft) comes out of the side or bottom of the steerng gear housing.

I agree that the worm can be rebuilt with welding and then machining. I would not expect the repair to be as durable as the original worm gear.

It should be more that adequate for your purposes.

I had not thought about pressing the worm gear on and off the shaft. That could be an even better alternative. However I am not sure that the ”˜38 and ”˜39 Master Deluxe worm gears are the same. The sector roller and pitman arms are different.

I can’t determine the differences from the info in the parts list.

The worm from a 1941-1948 would be closer to fitting on a 1939 shaft.....if the worm can e removed as it is swedged on the shaft.

Thanks all for your valuable input. I'm having it welded then machine. That way I know it will go back together...got the worm gear repaired
