What is the best fix for a sagging drivers side front seat on a 1940 MDSS?

There are no broken springs or frame members. However, the springs are obviously very fatigued. The seat has already been restored and recovered with the LeBarron Bonney/Hampton seat kit.

I do remember when I was restoring the seat, there was a heavy clothed (canvas?) piece that had steel wire incorporated in it that weaved front to back. This piece went the width and depth of the front seat. The LeBarron kit did not include this piece. I’m guessing this helped distribute the load across all springs? My seat has on top of springs burlap, jute material, cotton batting, and mohair upholstery.

Should I build and install something like this?

I’m willing to remove the seat and covering material if there is a good proven repair.

Thank you!

Romeo Engineering, a Corvette upholstery supplier, sells the burlap piece with the woven wire. Here is there website, look under the “vintage” category. Mike

The wire impregnated burlap is not what is causing the sagging of the springs. The burlap is used to keep the springs from poking through.
If the springs are staging then either they are not tied off or they are week.

Hi Curt,

I have a set of extra springs for my 1941 2 door. Let me know if you want me to send you any. I could even send you the bottom of a seat for you to take apart for parts.

Best wishes, and good luck dealing with potential weather conditions,

Mike

Hello Mike.

I will definitely consider your offer. I really think the best repair would be to carefully remove the seat covering and replace the springs that have fatigued.
I will let you know.

Yes, our weather should be getting “interesting” Thursday and Friday.

I hope you and your town have recovered well from the recent floods.

Oh, I finally joined VCCA August 23! I should have done that a long time ago. Thank you for encouraging me to join!

Thanks Mike,

Curt
