VCCA Home Forums TECHNICAL - 1945 AND EARLIER 1933-1936 1934 Standard Coach, which 3-speed manuals will fit?

I have a Chevrolet 1934 Standard Coach with a very worn 3-speed transmission.
The clutch and pedal vibrates lika a maniac and the synchros are all gone.

Do you know from which years I can source another 3-speed transmission from that will fit my engine? It will be very hard to find in Sweden a recon...
Will something from the 40s or 50s fit?

I'm willing to cut or lengthen the propshaft if needed but of course a bolt on would be preferable.

The only transmission that will fit is a 1934-1935 Standard.

The 1933-1936 Standard trans. is not syncronized.

Maybe I better focus on the fixing the clutch or replace the whole drivetrain then...

Parts to repair your transmission are not hard to find and not expensive. Finding the source of the problem is the first order of business.

The 1933-4 transmission uses a narrower spline on the main drive gear than the 1935-6. Also the universal housing is of a different design between 1933-4 and 1935-6.
Only minor things and all can be interchanged. Also the 1936 models use a different selector set up which requires a different top housing. Once again all interchangeable
with earlier models.

I went under it today, o my God it looks different compared to a little more modern cars

The throw out bearing looked very odd, not like a bearing at all It was wobbling a lot, the clutch or throwout bearing seems skew.
Is there any site where I can see exploded views of the clutch?

The best source of parts depending on what you may need will be Ebay USA or the Filling Station. Probably best to pull your gearbox and determine what repairs are needed. The clutch throw out bearing uses a carbon face and although do wear are generally trouble free. They are often on Ebay. If your clutch shudders a lot ,it could be one of a number of things including worn universal, worn rear axle housing or loose engine or transmission mounts. I personally believe and have proven this to myself on both my 1935 Standards that the biggest problem is weak clutch springs.

I was underneath it while it was idling and saw that the clutch fork and throw out bearing was moving a few milliliters for each engine lap! (sorry if that is not the correct word in English)
No wonder the clutch is rattling and shudders!

Maybe I need to pull my gearbox off (just need to figure out how to remove the strange looking propshaft ) and have a look at the clutch and throw out bearing.
