Hello
Can any one tell me what parts are needed to attach the vacuum assist for shifting? I was given my father in law 39 Chevy master 85. He purchased this in December of 1939. I found a NOS vacuum assist but not sure of what else is needed. I found the old one in the trunk, but just the vacuum assist. Also the repair manual not very clear to me. Thank you

Henry

The parts book shows all the parts used and they fit 1939 only. I can scan the page and email it to you.

The steering column gearshift was new for Chevrolet in 1939. Check out the November 1938 Service News for a description of how it operates.

As Gene noted the 1939 design is a one year design. The transmission was the same "top shift lever" as the '37 and '38. Chevrolet added a rather complex mechanism that converted the column shift lever motions to the required top shift lever motions.

In 1940 Chevy introduced a true "side shift" transmission.

If no trouble that would be a big help. He never threw away anything maybe still laying around in the garage.

Thanks Henry
