I’m back in Cleveland Ohio area ( Willoughby Hills ) and my ”˜51 Chevy has an original radiator which has decided to leak from several sources.

I’m open to the possibility of a repair shop or radiator replacement,
But am not interested in an aluminum radiator.

Don’t want to pay $550 bucks for a new one either.

Any help is appreciated, wasn’t certain which forum to place this post.

You have chosen an accetable thread for your subject.

I had the radiator recored on my 1950 Convertible at the tune of almost $1000. That included using and restoring my top and bottom tanks. A hunk of change, but don't expect to play radiator ever again in this car. It is a thing of beauty and works perfect. If you are going for a nice engine compartment, that is the first thing seen when you open the cap.

My radiator man is strongly against aluminum radiators. They are not made to expand and contract as they heat up and cool off and as a result are subject to cracks.

Hi Bob,

Sorry to hear about the radiator failure. Like Ray noted, there is no cheap way out of this situation unless you go to an aluminum radiator.

I am currently having 2 radiators for my '37 re-cored. The tanks and outlets are all good so I expect it will cost about $400 each. I am getting a price break because he is doing 2 at one time.

It is almost impossible to find a replacement radiator for my car. There was an one on eBay for $550 that had been re-cored many years ago and never used. The concern is whether that radiator is really still good after all these years. My understanding is that if the soldering flux is not properly neutralized it can eat into the metal. Normally that is not a concern because the radiator is put into use soon after the work is done and the coolant flowing through it takes care of that problem.

I also agree with Ray that I would prefer to spend the money to have a radiator properly re-cored than buy a new aftermarket unit. My batting average with aftermarket/reproduction parts is about 500. About half the time I need to make some modification or adaptation to get the part to fit and function correctly.
