Hello, I have a 53 Chevy 1/2 ton truck. I want to put in a higher gear for freeway driving. My rear end is not a 53 as there is a U joint at the back yoke. Does anyone know how to find the year to this rear end? Can it be looked up by the S/N. Thanks and have a good day...Oscar the Grouch.

The casting number off the rear center housing will help.As an example the number will be like 3743833 or 3707340 or?....Then you will need to determine the present ratio.Probably is now a 3.70 or 3.55...common later ratios. If it has a 1955-64 car rear end there are 3.36 ratios available which is probably about as tall a ratio as a ^ Cyl will pull. The truck engine always sounds as its over reving as the trucks used a larger fan that made more noise and there is no good fire wall insulation and no cloth material in the cab to asorb the noise. The stock ratio in a 1953 1/2 ton truck was a 4.11 - and that would be with the enclosed drive shaft. When the rear end ratio is changed the speedometer gears in the transmission also need to be changed to have an accurate speedo reading.-

Thanks Gene, I will get the casting number when it comes back from the wireing shop. I think it is a 55 but not sure. The rear end has a front cover and a rear cover with ten bolts and nuts on the end. Thanks...Oscar

If the rear has a removable cover its not from a 1955-64 car .
