I just purchased a 1978 Wheel Horse tractor with 10HP Kohler motor. The unit has been a one owner item and only used for mowing an medium size lawn. Great shape for 42 year old unit. For the last 10 years owner started it once a year but didn't use it. He used ARCO Graphite oil from day of purchase and says it doesn't use any. He gave me his last 2 qts of 10W-40. Oil is very black looking due to the graphite.
My questions are:
1- Has anyone had any experience (good or bad) using this type of lubricant in small motor application ?
2- Is this product still avail ?
3- If I drain the graphite oil and replace with modern 10W-30 oil am I asking for trouble ??

I realize this is not Chevrolet related but I had never heard of this type of oil before so decided to inquire & see if anyone has used it in their Chev Mtr or small engine.

Thanks; Dick

Arco Graptite oil was discontinued many years ago. I used it in my tool truck (Chev. 350 engine) for a few years. It would do the same function as zinc and other anti-scuff additives. The only time these additives "work" is if the oil film breaKs down and the product bonds to the hot metal surface. The Arco oil was black when you poured it in and made a mess if it contacted your clothes or driveway. I still have a full quart and and empty bottle that leaked on my garage floor.
I can see no reason that you could stop using it and switch to a more modern oil with a better aditive package.

Would it be similar to that Slick 50 product that came out about 30 years ago.

Slick 50 was an additive and you only added a percentage one single time to your crankcase. The graphite oil was actual normal oil you filled the entire crankcase with but it had graphite as one of its components like moly is used today.

If you have ever used graphite lock lube you will understand how black this stuff was...
