I am trying to activate the horn circuit in my 1931 Chevy Independence, When I got the car, no horn button contact pad was included. The wiring was a mess and still to be sorted out. I bought a new steering master sleeve bushing for the steering column, installed it and I have no activation of the horn. Any suggestions? What is the ground side of this circuit? Should i bypass the horn button and install a switch for the horn?

One terminal on the horn has 6 volts that leads back to the positive post on the battery. The other is connected to the wire from the mast jacket bushing. The "legs" on the horn button contact the brass plate on the bushing and provide the ground or connection to the negative post on the battery. Once the circuit is completed the horn should "beep".

Are you sure your horn works? If not, you can "bench test it" with a 6 v. battery charger. Chip described the circuit perfectly. The wiring diagram also shows this circuit.

going through this on a friends 31. first thing i did to validate horn was to disconnect horn wires at horn. then use jumper wires and connect horn directly to battery and beep beep. once that was validated it was where is it not working/connecting. all the wires conduct but the wire in the Steering Mast Jacket Bushing does not, so ordered a new one, yet to install it.

from the horn: + wire from the wiring harness, - wire runs up the steering column to the Steering Mast Jacket Bushing.

A continuity meter is always your friend when tracing wires. You can test your horn button by putting one lead to ground and the other to the wire coming out of the mast. The meter should register continuity when you depress the button. This is to test your button. Others have already explained on checking the other components.
