You're saying the starter won't disengage?

I am not an expert but it sounds like the solenoid isn't returning the starter drive. If it were me I'd try a new solenoid.

The solenoid and starter are separate entities. If the solenoid is bad changing the starter only will do nothing. If the teeth on the starter drive don't match the teeth on the flex plate someone else will have to chime in. That's nothing I have experience with.

The solenoid on a 51 is mounted on the starter and most shops would include that as part of a rebuild. From what I have read above I would first verify that the engine is indeed a 51 and then verify that the starter is correct with the correct drive gear. Also the ring gear should be checked for damage. Something as simple as a missing washer could cause the problem so best that a competent shop check out the starter. Would be good to know if all worked OK prior to the rebuild. If so then you need to determine what changes were made.

Most (including me) on here will say leave it 6 volt. I havent seen the 8 volt setup and doubt there is a 8 volt battery available here in Aus but may well be available in the US. Tony

A 8 volt battery will not cure the issue, check all you battery connections and grounds and make sure you have battery cables sized for 6 volt, 00.

To build on what's said above, an 8 volt battery is a poor bandaid for a problem and can cause more issues than it solves.

I'm no expert but the highest capacity that will fit the space is my goal.

NAPA makes a good commercial 6 volt battery. Be warned it has the larger posts however. It fits your stock battery tray. They can sell you cables that fit.
Speaking of cables, make sure you have good grounds and are using good heavy duty cables--typically 1 or 0 gage. Much fatter than normal modern cables. That'll ensure you are not losing current with smaller cables.

It will not affect the starting, but could cause problems after the engine has run for a while if the cap is not vented.
