There was a recent post talking about using non-gas rear shocks on a 1949-54 passenger car. Was there any specific products mentioned? I cannot find that post. Thanks

I have a 49 3100 pick up and went to non gas shocks on front and back on my truck and the ride was much better. I have all the info in my files.Give me a day or two and I'll repost with the info.

Gabriel Classics.
Rock Auto has only one left. Try a Gabriel distributor. That is what I have on my '50.

So I have a 49 3100 Pick Up. I put four new springs and hardware on and tried few different brand gas shocks. For me (my opion) I felt the ride was to stiff. I could not find any hydraulic shocks. I found A-1 Shock Absorber Co. in CO.
I sent the owner, Mark the collaspsed and extended measurements for front and rear shocks. A-1 then takes a gas shock apart and converts it to a hydraulic shock. My truck does not ride so stiff and the ride is a little softer which is what I wanted and like.

Looking at the Gabriel web site, this shock is a gas filled shock. The following is from the Gabriel web site: "Classic or collectible car owners can now have modern ride technology with the Gabriel Classic shock. Gas charged designs resist compression and improve rebound to keep your tires in contact with the road, while also reducing the fluid foaming that may degrade damping and lead to fade." So the only choices would be a gas filled shock or a hydraulic shock. Does this sound correct?

They must have changed it because the shocks I bought 18 years ago were not gas charged.I removed a pair of Monroe gas charged that the PO installed the previous year. They made the ride in the rear super stiff.

dougs, thanks for the information. I went to A-1 Shock Absorber's website and the cost for hydraulic shocks are $100 each. Going to have to wait until the piggy bank can get fat again. Gene, I have the Gabriel Classic shocks on now and the empty box states they are gas filled. Have not driven the car yet so I'll find out how the ride is real soon.

Gas filled is OK.....gas charged is different and gives a hard ride.

Charged shocks are pressurized. If you tried to push them down with your hands you cannot. They stiffen the suspension due to this.

Gas Filled shocks have only a small amount of gas - slightly more that ambient pressure. You can compress these shocks by hand and they don't spring back out the same as the charged shocks.

I just talked with a tech from Gabriel. The gas shocks that I have, part # 82155 are GAS CHARGED. I have not had this car out on the road since these shocks were installed. Will post an answer when I can.

Gas charged shocks come with a nylon strap holding them compressed if you remove the strap they extend with much pressure, they can be compressed by hand but it takes some force but not impossible.
