I decided to post here instead of the Engine forum hoping to get more first hand experience from early six owners. I have two versions of NORS head gaskets. I have copper and also steel. I know copper is original but once painted it wouldn't be seen. I think steel would be more durable but maybe harder to seal? All the steel and one copper are Fitzgerald brand and one copper is McCord. Right now I am leaning towards the steel encased version. Any thoughts or experiences? Thanks
Gasket King says “ use the copper one” as it fills the MICROSCOPIC imperfections and surface scratches in block surface and cylinder head.
Use K & W Copper coat , now owned by ( permatex ) gasket sealant. Comes in bottle with brush or spray. Also use it on any threads going into water antifreeze.
Make sure all cylinder head bolts are examined & measured for stretch. If possible use brand new bolts .
Copper and use the copper spray sealer as noted. Speaking from experience, when you spray your gasket with the copper spray, don’t have any other cars or nicely painted things within 40’ of where your spraying. I literally had a fine copper metallic look to the rear deck of my Oldsmobile that’s taken me hours to polish off. When I redid the head in the Olds I sprayed the gasket all the way down the other end of my 60’ long garage. The copper particles carried through the air all the way to the other end settling on the rear of my car. I couldn’t believe it!
