I have several air cleaners I believe are correct for a 216 with a W-1. However I want to restore one for a 1937 master. The choice is a real short, about 2 inches high, dry type, an oil bath and dry type. I lean toward a full height dry type but what were the others used on? Could one get optional cleaners on request?

For a 1937 pass. car the tall dry mesh air cleaner was sandard equipment and the tall oil bath an option. The low air cleaners are for trucks and did ot have the incoming air silencing feature.

Some are gray, some are black. Any significant, which would be correct.

I have never seen a gray air cleaner.

The 1937 passenger car air cleaner is listed in the 1939 parts book as being for 1937 only.The1938 is listed for 1938 and 1939.
The pictures in the engineering book are not too clear but 1937 looks the same as 1938 and in the 1938 engineering book the air cleaner is not mentioned as being new and improved.
In the 1941 parts book one air cleaner is listed for 1937-1940.

Thanks Gene, black it will be. Guess if it looks like 37 and fits the carb, W-1, it must be 37.

I have both the shorter one (about 6 or 7" high, oil type) and the taller one (about 8 to 9" high with copper mesh filter, dry type). I use the shorter one because it fits under the brace bar. But wish the top/center could be removed without taking the entire breather off the carburetor. The taller one I wanted to use however it will not fit under the brace bar. Think my brace bar is bent a bit so was thinking about removing it and trying to straighten it appropriately. Anyone else find this issue? Painted both mine black. The taller was originally grayish silver.
