ok so i took a small road trip today to help out a local friend, he has a 1931 2 Door Chevrolet. Picture below. dad bought it in the 50's and still in the family. looks like some thing are still original, some replaced.

i was trying to figure out what this one part was on the hose from the head water outlet to the radiator. it does have the optional heater, with the T in the coolant line to the water pump, then the return line goes to a t & valve in the back of the head with the thermostat off the top.

also on the inside the firewall still has burlap tacked to it and the covering over it has fallen down, rolled and is now very brittle and no longer pliable.

It could be an adjustable thermostat.
