What years did the 490 use the main shaft that was made with the gear as part of it? I have a steering column assembly that was told is 490 and looks like others I have see. The others that I have seen the internal parts, the part in question, looks be be assembled to the shaft not part of it.

On my 1922 the small gear is welded (or soldered?) to the steering shaft, as maybe yo can see on
this picture.

While your weld looks a bit rougher then mine (maybe repaired at some point?), I just went out and looked at mine, I see it now. Thanks for that information. I have seen 490 boxes that the shaft looked to be separate part from the gear.
