Hi Guys, Can anyone confirm that the 174 engine is a straight swap with a 216. Regards Chris

Do you mean a 194 six? From what I have heard it is far from a straight swap and would require much modification.

Thanks cabboy, Yep, I would like to swap my 1929 Chevy engine and gearbox with a later model, like a 216.

I have a '32 with a '36 engine. I think that is the newest engine that wil fit. lengthwise. To put in a 216 you will need to either cut a hole in the firewall or move the radiator forward. If you are going to do that, why not swap for a 235?

The 216 is actually a tad shorter - but still will take a lot of cahnges to install....the 235 is the same length as a 216.

Thanks Gents, Much appreciated. I have a stock 29 Phaeton in great condition. I want a drop in engine upgrade. Otherwise I will live with what I have. I don’t want a hot rod. Thanks again and stay safe.

I would stay with the original engine, it would take a lot of modifications to do that swap and it would make the car worth less as an antique. If you want more power and speed sell the 29 and get something newer.

An additional consideration for any engine swap that increases performance is the capability of the rest of the vehicle to handle that increase performance.
How much more cooling capacity is needed?
Will the brakes and steering handle the higher speed?
Are the suspension, chassis, and frame strong enough to handle the increased loads due to hitting bumps and potholes at a higher speed?
How will that wooden body hold up under the additional shock and twisting from the higher speeds.
