Hello everyone,

I am working on my 1941 Chevy Master Deluxe and I noted that someone had removed the bulb from the dome light. Testing it, I saw that there was power there, but the switch was not working. So, I went to remove the little plastic/bakelite switch on the doorpost and it fell apart in my hands. I assume it was malfunctioning and so the previous owner just pulled the bulb.

Does anyone have a switch that they could sell me? I cannot find one anywhere here in Canada. I can find lots of door jamb switches, but mine is the type that the passenger turns on and off themselves.

Also, I noted that my switch has just one wire running to it. I assume this is a ground? I would have expected two wires but maybe not in a car this old.

The "other" wire to the bulb is hot all the time and the switch is a ground.

You'll probably have better luck if you post an ad in the Parts Wanted forum.

I have a few dome light switches as does ebay. I also have some of the correct screws if you are missing them. Getting the switch to work consistently takes a little patience since one of the screws serves as the ground. If the screw can not be snuggly tightened it doesn't complete the ground. If the switch is not making good contact with the ground side as you switch it on (a little sloppy) that can cause erratic results.

When I put in a new wire harness and headliner I installed an extra switch on the passenger side. It doesn't work as well as the one on the driver side. As you look at the switches on ebay you should be looking at one that shows a metal ring where the screw is seated. If you purchase the wrong switch then it will have two terminals on the backside for screwing two wires on. One wire for ground the other for the hot wire.

Attached are some pictures of the switches, the correct screw, and my dome light. You can see what happens when your screw is not tightening enough to ground the switch you end up putting in a larger screw. Yes, I know that the dome light in my 41 is not the correct one.

I got mine from the ebay guy from Carlton, MI.

Good luck, Mike

Hi Mike,

Oh those look exactly like mine. I checked out Ebay and it seems almost nobody will ship to Canada. Do you have a spare that I could purchase from you? My car interior is a purple, so perhaps the red one would work best, but I'm not too picky on that.

The red one is for a dome light with two wires. The other two are for one hot wire. So would you prefer the beige one or the dark brown one?
Let me know which one you prefer and send me a PM with your address.

Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike,

I would have to think the beige one matches up better to purple, but it's hard to say. Okay, I will PM you, and thank you!
