While driving my 31 sport coupe, when going over big bumps the horn has started beeping. All wiring, connections, everything was rebuilt / restored in 2009 and only driven sporadically since. I have not seen any bare wires anywhere the wires are visible. Could it be something in the steering column? Any thoughts on why this happens? How to correct it?

Thanks.

Jim.

The horn wire should have a disconnect at the steering box end of the column. I would disconnect the steering column wire there and then take it for a ride. If no beep then the wire in the steering column is shorting to ground and will need to be replaced.

It is likely under the horn button in the steering wheel. That is really the only place there could be much movement.

The problem with the horns is the signal wire is the ground so anywhere from the steering column to the inside of the horn itself can be the culprit. Disconnecting the steering column is a good start but make sure the wire end at 5he disconnect is not touching any ground. Where the wire goes through the conduit up the radiator shroud is another and even the stud of the horn.

Did you fix it? If not, send your email to me and I will forward everything you would ever need to know about how your horn works.
