Getting ready to clean-up and restore my transmission and differential on my 1928 4 cylinder Chevy. The Filling Station has for sale a 600W Gear Oil that they say is to be used in 1920-1936 Chevy's.
Is this the gear oil that you guys are using for your transmissions and differentials?
ALSO, how many quarts would be needed to completely replace and refill both transmission and differential?
Thanks,
Todd

Yes, that's the right stuff. I would buy 5 quarts. That should give you enough to fill the transmission and rear end with a bit left to top them up when needed.

All the Best, Chip

PS: The Model A Fo*d suppliers also sell 600W: Snyder's and Mike's and others, but the Filling Station has been our "go to" place and is s firm supporter of VCCA

Use this stuff, LUBRIPLATE SPO-277. Expensive but worth the price.

While it's a mineral oil and fine with the brass components I would be a little concerned that it's rated as SAE 70 where the 600W is similar to a SAE 140.

THH,

I found that gear oils like Lubriplate SPO-277 and SPO-288 are available in quarts directly from Lubriplate for $21.50 and from various vendors:

https://www.lubriplate.com/Products/Fluid/SPO-Series/SPO-277/SPO-277/SPO-277-1-QT-BTL/

The SPO-288 in my '36 PU came from WBC Industrial in Colorado Springs for $17,39 per quart.

The stuff you used is ISO viscosity 460 and the stuff I used is ISO viscosity 680.

The next more viscous in the Lubriplate SPO line is ISO 1000. So we can blend any viscosity we like. This stuff is actual gear oil

"600W" is steam cylinder oil.
