Currently I am trying to remove the transmission shifter. It appears that the collar that holds the shifter in place is screwed to the top of the trans. Problem is this collar will not move. I am using a large adjustable channel lock wrench but it will not budge. Am I on the right track or is there a better way? My vehicle is a 1936 Chevrolet Standard Coach. It is not modified and is original.

Channel locks just damage what is there, and cause the threads to bind.. Better to use a chain wrench. In the pipe industry they call them chain tongs. The one I use is about 12" long and its chain loops back on itself.

Thanks for the reply. I am on my way to Home Depot to look for one. This collar has probably never been off before. It is really stuck.

I was able to remove the collar with a chain wrench from Harbor Freight. Home Depot no longer carries them. You are correct, the collar is made of thin metal and the more you squeeze it the tighter it will be. Thanks again for the help.

Good job! In my case that coller always was loosening up while driving and I would have to turn it tight every so often.

No, I removed the shifter to remove the transmission to replace the gaskets due to leaking fluid. I also replaced the ring gear on the flywheel because the teeth were worn away 60 t0 70% in the 3 spots it always stops. I have completed this fun operation and have put all back together. As things go I ended up replacing the clutch and throw out bearing due to wear.
