It may help if you advise where you are located. Then perhaps a member in that area might know of someone that can help. Your Chat profile shows "CA" but not sure if that is Canada or California.

Local parts stores can advise you of local rebuilders.

Make sure they have a "starter" bolt wrench. It has a half-moon shape with enclosed ends. Otherwise the job will take much longer and be more expensive.

Have yours rebuilt. You'll support your local re-builder and get a quality product in return. We all should support our local automotive product suppliers, re-builders, re-chromers, radiator shops, glass shops, etc. They are getting scarcer due to many ordering online, or purchasing foreign built, re-manufactured products instead of locating a nearby source.

Make sure you tell the shop if you want the outside of the starter painted or not. In particular, if you don't talk to them about this, they might paint right over the nameplate. Don't ask how I know this. ;-(

Hi Dean. I'm in Lafayette, California. Can you advise me as to who did your starter rebuild and where they are located? Thanks Dean Mel

Hi Mel,
I won't recommend the folks that rebuilt my starter, because I thought they charged too much for what they did and they painted over the starter's nameplate. I tried to remove just the outer layer of paint, but all the writing on the nameplate came off too. I know, I bear some responsibility for not telling them to stay away from the nameplate.
I will recommend the folks that rebuilt Lurch's generator (click on the links below for info about Lurch). I told them that it was IMPERATIVE that they NOT clean the outside of the generator and they left it all grundged up just like I asked them. ;-) But, totally new innards and it works great!
They are: Buchanan Auto Electric Inc, 2300 Mandela Pkwy, Oakland, CA 94607, (510) 452-4025
BTW, a friend of mine in Oakland owns a 1950 Chevy business coupe and I suspect he has some spare parts squirreled away under his house. If you need to connect with him, send me an email at dhmeltz at aol dot com.
Cheers, Dean
