Need some help, my engine will run if I keep the starter running but dies when I stop cranking the motor over. I thought maybe I should run another wire from battery to coil but nothing changes - any help would be appreciated

Mike: Turn your key to the run position and check to see if you have voltage to the coil. If so then check for a no spark condition. (Coil, cap rotor points etc) If no voltage ; then check wiring going back through ignition, amp gauge and to the battery.

The description has me thinking that the ignition timing is not correct. Takes starter to keep the engine/flywheel turning. Of course it could also be incorrect fuel mixture

It sounds like the distributor timing is too retarded.

Still lost....
Steve, ran a hot wire from battery to coil, no change Coach man, advanced distributor - no change Chipper - going to swap out with a freshly rebuilt carb,
During my trouble shooting did change our coil, condenser and points, just strange will run with the starter engaged. But not on its own
