On my 44 1/2 ton I am rebuilding as I go along and the latest is the transmission and rear. So I got new gaskets and seals and want to know how tight can I make the nut on the back end where the ujoint ball housing meets the torque tube? I filled the transmission with the correct amount and have seepage from the nut, I have tightened it and still have seepage but not sure what would be to tight. I’m sure once it’s “tight enough” it stops leaking lol.

Make it darn tight....for this reason. The original seal was a rubber coated felt and easy to compress. If you are using a "modern" hard cork/neoprene type seal it will tAKE A LOT OF FORCE TO SQUASH IT AND GET IT TO CONFORM TO THE TUBE. MAY ALSO BE NECESSARY TO RETIGHTEN A FEW TIMES.

Ok I’ll get out the big pliers and give it some more twist. Guess my biggest thought was it won’t slide but something tells me with the weight and force of things moving going down the road it will still slide as needed.

Buy a rubber or chain strap wrench as the even force helps with tightening and avoids any damage from pliers. They work really well for many tasks like this so worth having.

You may want to do a SEARCH of old posts for past discussion of this topic. Here is a link to a Filling Station article on their recommendations:
Universal Ball

Good luck, Mike

I have an old school 18" pipe wrench that works great for tightening it.

I did read that article and anything I could find before I started this, but nothing really mentioned the nut other than make sure the washers were on both side of the gasket. I’ll just keep tightening it.
