Hello all - new to the forum!
I have purchased what I think is a 1928 Chevy Sedan. It's the full size, but just 2 doors. 4 cylinder engine. I'll try to post a picture.

My question is, the guy I bought it from thinks it is a 1929, but with the 4 cylinder engine, I am wondering if it might be a 1928. Just looking for possibly where the serial number would be, or any identifying features to determine the year.

I'm sure there will be many questions on here while I try to get this car back on the road. It has had an amateur restoration several years ago, and last ran in 1996. Should have it home this weekend and look at what it will take. Thanks in advance for any help you can give - Bob

OK, might need help figuring how to post a picture..lol!

Hi Bob,

Your first chore is to look all over the car, block, head, and copy ANY information you can find. Then post it here and we will interpret it for you. In the meantime I suspect you have a 1928.

In addition to what Ray said, look closely on the firewall for a Fisher Body tag, and on the floor near or under the passenger seat for a car number tag. It's definitely not a '29 -- all '29s were six cylinder cars. If it's a '28, it will have a shroud between the radiator and the engine which encloses the fan. (The history is that they extended the frame in 1928 in anticipation of putting the longer six-cylinder engine in the cars, but the engine wasn't ready in time, so they had to install the shroud as a "spacer" so the fan would be efficient). It's a distinctive 1928 feature.

Welcome to the world of old Chevys!

All the Best, Chip

OK, so I got the car home, and I believe it is a 1924. The tag on the key says 1924, and there is an old car tag on the front bumper from 1924 year.
I will look today to see what numbers I can come up with. There is some type of generator on the right/passenger side of the engine.
Is there a way to post pictures, or if I could get an email address I can send pics of the car.

I did have my wife pull me around the yard (live on a farm) and it turns over good with good oil pressure. It last ran in 1996. Thanks - Bob

I did look all over the front and inside the car and can find no numbers at all. No tags or no stamped numbers.

The generator is gear driven off the front of the engine, not belt driven. Looks like the push rods are exposed on the right side of the engine.

Inspect the block for cast in numbers and letters, same with the head. Both items, head and block, will have a casting date and casting number. That is the information we need. Is the oil pump mounted on the end of the generator?

The serial number on the block is 1880691. It looks like the casting number might be CH 135 on the right side of the block, and bekow that is 344624. Right below that is 14

I dont see any markings on the head, unless it would be under the valve covers.

The oil pump looks to be off the back of the generator.

You used the word "valve covers". That says 1925.

Oil pump off back of generator is 1925.

Later I will look up the casting number.

344624 is the casting number for 1925 block. Looks like you have a '25 Chevrolet Sedan.
