I have 2 questions regarding the adjustment procedures for the 1929 Chevy Coach. The first is on the brake cross shaft alinement tool. There are two holes that the tapered pin will fit in for the rod adjustment I will call upper and lower holes. Which hole is correct for the tapered pin and when you remove the gage is that the same hole for the brake pedal rod? Second question is for the rear external shoe adjustment. The service bulletins says that the brake lever should be at the stop. I don't have a stop the lever travels to the rear of the car about 3 or 4 in and forward until the shoes start to engage the drum. I'm I missing something. This is all done without the adjustable rods installed. Thanks to all.
ok, here is what i did on my 1929, i got the tool and then the instructions, have the set from the Chevrolet repair manual, Chiltons (yes chiltons), and then the Chevrolet service news. the chilton has pictures, as does the service new one.
FRONT the guide tool is 1929 specific and per the instruction the pin does NOT go in the hole but lines up with it, since it is at an angle, (points to it) i centered the pin to point at center of the hole in the brake piece. the hole is the same as the one that the brake pedal lever connects to. picture of hole below front rod should rest against the front stop. as in picture
REAR i let the brake lever rest against the strap on the rear parking brake lever. as in picture, then did all the adjustments per the instructions.

also made sure your cross shafts move freely and easily by hand with little or no effort with rods disconnected you should be able to spin it and then the springs should pull it back easily and freely. i had to remove mine clean it up and then reinstall and shim/square it up and now it is super smooth !!
Thanks for the pictures I see my problem. The piece that the adjustment gauge tapered pin points to has 2 holes on mine. Your's only has 1 hole can't go wrong with that.
The previous owner of my 29 coupe drilled an extra hole in the c shaped piece that equalizes the front and rear cross shafts. He was having difficulty with the brakes and thought if he changed the pivot point it would help with the stopping ability. When I got the car I remove, cleaned, and lubricated every pivot point, cross shaft, and brake component on the entire system. It now stops as good as it did when new. Every year you should take an oil can and lubricate all of those points.
Thanks to BearsFan 315 question answered. I have the brake rod in the correct hole on the proportioner. Just a wild thought but my 29 coach was built in Jan of 29 in the Oakland Ca. plant and first sold here in Sacramento Ca. in early Feb of 29. Is it possible that the proportioner had a very early change. I have verified that the car was all original when I purchased it in 1998. All the wood was dry rotted I had to tear it down But all original parts are back on per a very early Ca Title that I have.
