general question talking with The Filling Station they sell the Fiber Cam Gear RW-593, however they are OVERSIZED, and they said they have to be trimmed to fit, per their instruction they sent me you have to set up engine, then slide on the cam gear to shave the gears to mate to the crank gear. says to rotate cam and do each gear, then remove it and lean it up then soak in oil before final install.

just wondering has anyone done this, or should i look for a NOS gear that is NOT OVERSIZED ??
or is this a typical install procedure for most all fiber gears on the 194 ??

Chevrolet never sold an "oversized" timimg gear. They state that the fiber and steel gear be replaced if there was excessive wear on the steel gear teeth. The oversized gear was an after market thing for a patch job.
Today it could be used if a new steel gear could not be obtained.

As stated the oversized gear was for use with a worn crank gear and was aftermarket. You kind of need to install a standard gear first to see what play there is and if too much then an oversize gear could be used. I wouldn't think a hand cut fibre gear would be really good in an engine. At least I wouldn't want to have to sit there and try to fit each and every tooth? If this was a rare engine with no parts available then yes but on a chevy 6?

My engine rebuilder refused to do it. I gave him the oversized gear from TFS but he said the old one was fine. I would be sure you really need to replace it.

While the old gear may look OK I would be doubtful of reusing it because timing gear failure was all too common on 6 Cyl Chevrolet engines . Also very important to have timing gear oiling passages cleand out as plugged passages caused many timing gear failures.
