The brake lights are not working on my 46 1/2 ton. I held the pedal down and worked the lever on the switch. I think I should hear a click as the contact breaks or closes. Should I hear a click? Or feel something?

Not necessarily. I suggest you use a volt/ohm meter to check for voltage or continuity.

There are sliding contacts in the switch and should not click.
Is one wire "hot"? remove the wires and connect them together, the brake lights then should work.....Those switches do not have a long life.

Finally got under the truck and found a broken wire right where the wires going to the switch coming out of the loom. Looks like it is electrical tape. I also pulled the switch and it is good.
Will need to get one of my buddies to try to splice it and reinstall the switch. My body doesn't work as good as it used to.

Glad you found the problem! And I identify with your comment about getting the body to move like it did.

There is a key point that we do not mention often with respect to the contacts in the various switches in a direct current circuit.

Every time those contacts open or close there is a slight spark along with the transfer of a small amount of material from one contact to the other. In a direct current circuit that transfer is always in the same direction. So over time one contact erodes and the other grows. Plus there is some oxidation along with the material transfer.

The ignition points are the best example of this process. That is why they need cleaned periodically and eventually replaced.

In an alternating current circuit the material transfer happens in opposite directions. Plus in higher frequency circuits (like 50 or 60 Hz in a house) the transfer rate almost makes the contacts "self cleaning". And that is why we replace switches in our vehicles a whole lot more often than in our house.

Enough science lesson for today!
