I thought I read there was a water pump change made in mid year 37,if so did the pump get longer or shorter. Getting a 235 ready to go in my 37 and have what I think is a original fan but it hits the balancer, trying to figure out if I will need a 38 or 39 fan.

You need the short shaft water pump. Then you may need a spacer.

The present engine has a 49 to 54 fan and is about 1/4 inch from the radiator so I got a original fan so I could get more room,I grabbed a fan off a 46 to 48 in the junkyard and has the edges clipped to clear the balancer but the blades are wider and might put it back to where it is now so a spacer might have to be made if I can find that extra pulley to make it from. I guess I will find out when I change the engine and try to put it back togather and I do not remember any fan issues when it had the 47 216 but that was many years ago.

I just remembered when I had the radiator done I had a 4 row core put in so I might have to go back to a original style core to get the clearance I need.

Please check my responses in the general section.

I agree that you have a lot of variables to consider. That will probably make any stock fan irrelevant.

When I got the truck it had a 47 216 and most likely had the original fan and there was no clearance issues even with the wider belt but who knows what happened to that fan, that 216 got tore apart by a 16 year old thinking it was going to be rebuilt but ended up getting rusted up and on the scrap pile and then off to find a full pressure engine and the problem I have now. I took some measurements off the fan on the existing engine so off to the local old junkyard next saturday to see what I can find.

My parts book lists 7 different part # for fan blades 1937 to 1945. I have copied the full listing in another thread but when I posted it the formatting changed making it a bit difficult to read.

The balancer was not all the way in but the fan is still too close for comfort so a spacer will be made.

I just installed a 1955 235 engine in my '37 pickup. The 235 block was the same length as the 216 I removed. The early 235 had the water pump mounted with the impeller inside the water pump. The later 235 engine had the impeller on the outside of the pump, with a hole in the block that the impeller mounted into. This later engine block is approx. 1 inch longer with this modification. If that is what you have, you will need the short shaft water pump. I used the original style water pump and I have approx 3/8 inch clearance from the the original '37 radiator. I used a '55 fan blade. If I can answer any other questions about my engine change, let me know.
Thanks for letting me put my 2 cents in.
