1923 4cyl 171 idle rpm and top speed rpm anybody know approx thanks

You might want to check the operator's and repair manuals for your car. In that time period very few if any mechanics had tachometers. So rather than a number the instructions were to set the idle speed down until the motor turns very slowly yet maintains operation.
The concept of "redline" or a top operating speed for an engine was never really considered in that era. If you could find any data (or a torque and horsepower chart) the graph would typically only go out as far as the engine speed at which the maximum readings were taken.
The conditions of roads in 1923 really limited how fast one would travel. And you always wanted to keep the car in the highest gear that would hold your speed. The bottom end of these engines (bearings and lubrication system) were not designed for high speed.

I did a search on the forums and came up with the following information:
The 1928 Chevrolet Engineering Data lists the 1927 as having 30.5 HP @ 2000 rpm's and the 1928 as having 35 HP at 2200 rpm's.

yes it does just confirms my guess actually did calculations at 35 mph found 2100 rpm trying to get idea of oil pump rpm range to test flow and presser for rebuild of 171 thanks again
