A friend acquired a low-mileage wagon with V-8 power that had been purchased new by the proverbial school teacher who seldom drove it (she also had a bicycle). He has the build sheet which refers to the Doraville (Atlanta, GA) plant.

However, having run the VIN through an internet search engine, that states it came from a plant in KOSAI JAPAN.

Does that make sense? Could it have been assembled in Japan and shipped to Georgia?

VIN is 1G1AT35H2BD454590

Not really. The first digit of the VIN is the country of origin. 1=USA, 2=Canada, J=Japan, Z=Italy and so on. I don't know how to decode the rest of it offhand, but I vote for Georgia.

I do not believe Malibus were assembled in Japan....or any other standard GM cars like Impalas , Novas, Impalas, etc.
