how can I find out what gm motors I have, using the numbers casted on motors block and stamped on flanges ?? P,S, I,m probably in wrong forum, but I don,t know what else to do. Im am NOT good with these cumputers.

Thanks Tony, Here goes.. 1st motor has 3692703 cast on block and JAD1241637 on flange by distributer... 2nd motor has 3835497 cast on block and JAM480158 on flange by distributer, Will them numbers tell me the year and size of motor? or o you need more info. Thank You very much, Doc

The serial numbers starting with J indicate 1951 model year.
The JAM is a 216 CI Passenger car engine made in Tonawanda.
I don't know the application for the JAD, but the D indicates it was made in Flint. The casting number should indicate if 216 or 235.

The JAD engine is a 1951 235 engine from a 1951 passenger car with Power Glide

Thanks for the reply and great info. Over 70 years anything can happen cause the JAD ENGINE has a 3 speed tranny with a rogchester carb and the JAM engine has a 4 speed tranny with a carter carb , didn.t trucks only have 4 speed? also.. where is Tonawanda ? Thank you very very much. Doc

In New York-this is from Wikipedia;

Tonawanda Engine is a General Motors engine factory in Buffalo, New York. The plant consists of three facilities totaling 3.1 million square feet (290,000 m2) and sits upon 190 acres (77 ha).
