Do you have to put any sealer around the edges of freeze plugs before you press them in?

It is a good idea but normally not necessary. With our older engines any corrosion or irregularity in the seat area for the "Welch plug" (yes they are really Welch plugs and NOT freeze plugs) could result in a leak. Best to add sealer to be sure that everything is A-OK.

Bob,
I would recommend a sealant such as Permatex #2. I would not use a silicone sealant (which I think you are using based on your comment of "bead".)
The silicone type will not seal well in this application.

I did not use a silicone sealer, I just meant that I coated the edge of the plug.

The universal sealer: "SNOT". Just dip the "welch" plugs in old faithful and install. If you coat the steel plugs in the magic formula it will also delay them from rusting.
