If you look on the cowl, under the right side of the hood, you will see a Chevrolet chassis plate and (if you have a Fisher body) an aluminum body plate with body information as pictured below.
[Linked Image from vccachat.org]
Style No 38- = 1938 model year, 12 = Standard chassis, 71 = Sedan Delivery (SDDL) (but it's not)
Trim No. 72 is not listed. #74 is for a 38 SDDL
Paint No. 221 = Export Blue.
What does "Body No. K 47" mean? Special modifications to body?

Thanks, Lou

I think that "K" stands for the assembly plant at Kansas City.

Best,

. Thank you for the explanation.
For reasons unknown, the Chevrolet chassis plate was removed and replaced with a piece of sheet metal.
Someone took the time to stamp part of the serial number on it. (See photo)
5 = KansasCity, HB = 38 standard passenger car, 10 = October. The rest of the serial is missing.

Do you have any idea what the 47 means after the K?
. The reason I'm asking is, even tho the Style no. says Sedan Delivery, it is a wagon.
The rear side windows are stamped in the side and not added on.
The back door window rolls down but the side windows do not.
The front doors are 4 door sedan. The back door is Sedan Delivery
The rear side windows are larger than a sedan but the center is smaller than a limousine.
Pontiac, Olds, small Buick used a "B" body, so it couldn't have borrowed stampings from them.
Do you have any idea of its history?
Thanks, Lou

I am thinking a professional car built by one of the ambulance, hearse, flower car builders. They took factory or partially factory assembled vehicles and modified them for specific duties and businesses.

How Sweet the roar of a Chevy four!

Lou,
Can you tell what the original seating arrangement was?

Hi Chipper,
. I don't see anything like it in the Silver Book but companies like Boyertown made delivery vans for 1937 & 38 Chevys & GMCs and are not listed in Silver book. <http://home.znet.com/t1937/Dubl.htm>
. Paul Hafer bought GM chassis, moved the steering forward and built the body. GM objected saying their steering wasn't designed for the extra weight of COE design and refused to sell him more chassis. He said there were very few GM and most were Diamond T and Dodge.
. Flxible was in house (Like Fisher) so their 37 Chevys had Ross steering. Being in house, they were not in the Silver book either.
. I could not find a body maker tag anywhere on this wagon. They are usually located on the right side under hood or by door.
(On the 36 Flxible the body tag is on the firewall. On the 38 Flxible its on the rear luggage compartment door. On my 37 Flxible bodied Chevy, I don't know where the heck it is. )
. .
Hi Mike,
. The Sedan Delivery used the same bucket seats as the standard Coach except used moleskin (naugahyde) instead of Mohair. The right side passenger seat was an extra cost option in the Sedan Delivery, Panel, and Canopy Express. <http://home.znet.com/p1937/Sddl.htm>
There are 8 holes in the floor in preparation for bucket seats or they had been removed. It has the adjustment rod for a bench seat.
. .
The gas tank is in the business coupe - sedan delivery location so there is no room for the back seat foot well.
. Thanks for your input, Lou
