Today I drove my '38 to work and back (about 12 miles one-way). Drove well except engine smoked a little more than usual. I got home and checked the engine, and the oil dipstick showed a mocha-looking solution that is apparently water in my oil. I am not an experienced mechanic but I fear this is a head gasket problem? I hope it is not more than that. What steps should I take next? Once the engine cools I suppose I will pull the valve cover off and see what it looks like in there. There was steam / smoke coming out of slots in the valve cover too. Not good.

Is the level of the coolant down?

Have you been making a lot of short trips lately?

Could be head gasket or cracked cylinder head. Also coolant leak where the rocker arm oil line goes thru the block behind the push rod cover.

You are spot on Chevnut. Friend and I pulled the pushrod cover plate and saw coolant dripping from the rocker arm oil line where it goes through the block. Apparently the seal between the oil line and the block is compromised. Plus we have two bent pushrods and a stuck intake valve on the #3 cylinder! Going to pull head and take it to local shop to have them repair stuck valve. Loads of fun today LOL!
