Actually your powerglide calls for Type A ATF if you can't find any go with the new stuff, the Dextron III I just happen to have a case of Type A ATF

Maybe I should put it on eBay for a hundred dollars a quart, along with the Quart of GulfPride 30 wt. I found in the attic (in a plastic can). I also found a case of Phillips 66 40 wt. ashless aviation engine oil, I guess it will work in a squirt can!

As a rule its always best to used the latest most modern version of motor oil, trans. fluid and anti-freeze due to the improvements that have been made over the years.

If you were to change from type A to Dextron would there be a problem with the Dextron mixing with the type A that would still be left in the transmission?

No, they are compatible.Just that the Type A remaining will dilute the Dexron and its full benefit will not be utilized. The early years had a drain plug in the converter so more fluid could be removed. On mine I just changed the sump two years in a row.Due to the fact that Type A has been gone for years I would guess that most transmissions have a mixture of both or all Dexron in them today.

Gene is right on. I do have a case of Type A ATF but I don't put it into my cars transmissions, even the turbo 400 in the 68. I recently changed the vacuum modulator and the internal filter, I drained as much fluid as I could (several quarts) and I refilled it with the new stuff. I use the old Type A ATF to flush out the 90 wt. in the old engines, trannys and rearends when I redo them after they have sit a few decades in a pasture or wrecking yard.

Hi Guys, Thanks all for replies! The local parts store has Dexron III/Mercron ATF; is there one out there that is just Dexron III ? Or do I go with the Dexron /Mercron?

The Dexron/Mercron is fine. The Mercron is also correct for some F-o-r-d transmissions. There are also many brands that just say Dexron also.

FYI, Continued research on Type A ATF has led me to the "Champion Brands" Co. located in Clinton, MO. They still make the Type A fluid and is available for purchase (probably for less than $100 a quart!!!!) Anyway, if interested Contact at www.championbrands.com or 800 821 5693. Personally I will follow the forum recommendations and go with the new stuff.

Interestingly enough, I found type A fluid in a local grocery store that had a small automotive section. But like the rest of you if I need to change fluid on one of my older cars I'll change to Dextron also.
