Alright guys, at 16 years old my brother taught me to drive a 4-speed on his new '64 Malibu SS. Well fast forward 54 years. I've found one I'd very much like to buy. I need someone to help me decipher the cowl tag. I'm getting this from a photo so it may not be exactly right. Any help would be appreciated.
STYLE: 64-5867 BODY: EP 1580 TRIM: 714-1 PAINT: 948 A ACC: E 2LS 3C 57
Thanks

Well, I've done a little research and made some changes based on what I learned. I found www.chevellestuff.net. They have lots of information. STYLE: 64-5867=1964 Chevelle SS convertible I don't know what the BODY EP 1580 is yet TRIM: 714=black imitation leather buckets; 1=white convertible top PAINT: 948=Palomar Red (maroon) - don't know what the "A" is for ACC: the accessories are broken into 5 groups Group 1 - E=tinted glass; Group 2 - L=4-speed S=rear antenna; Group 3 - C=padded dash; Group 4 (n/a) Group 5 - can't find a code 7.

Seems like no one here is interested in this but me. Or maybe everyone but me already knew all this. Either way here's some more. "EP" indicates the body was assembled at Euclid Ohio (#1580) and shipped to Atlanta ("A") for final assembly. There is no "7" for group 5 accessories so that's probably a misread of the photo I'm looking at.

Last year I spent quite a bit of time deciphering cowl tags on various models of 60's GM cars. What I learned is that there is no definitive source for cowl tag format and content for any given brand or model.
Even for the same year, make, and model the layout of the tag will vary from plant to plant. With respect to content, I was typically only to decipher about 90%. It seemed like no matter what internet source I used I could never completely determine the full content.
One suggestion is to contact the GM Heritage Center of the library at AACA where they also house a large collection of information donated by VCCA members.
Sorry that I am not able to add clarity to your information.
Thanks Rusty. I discovered the same thing. Each plant had their own unique way of listing the information. I find it a very interesting endeavor - another way of enjoying antique cars - working on them, driving them and learning about them - a pretty good way to kill a couple of hours instead of watch TV.
