I am in the process of ordering an exhaust system for my 50 Sedan with a powerglide. The apparently is a different system for a 3 speed, the difference is the muffler is shorter on the PG, thus affecting the length of the pipes, Could I get by with a 3 speed muffler and pipes? Have you done it?
The reason I am asking is that there could be a long lead time for the Powerglide muffler, and I am looking to get this done in the next 2-3 weeks before I head south to FLA

The muffler is the same length.
The difference is the exhaust pipe and tail pipe is of a larger diameter with the 235 PowerGlide engine.

I was told by a well known exhaust vendor that the muffler has a longer OL then the three speed. I just looked it up in the Chevrolet Parts Book that I had handy (March 1966) and what he said was confirmed. Therefore the pipes would have a different part number to accommodate the difference. I just can't see there being a clearance issue,........but....??? That is group 3.701

49-52 exc Conv and pg........ 20 1/2" OL...... 3698040

50-52 PG exc conv
53 all ................22" OL..............3698041

the inlet pipe for a 216 is 1 7/8" and 235 is 2" in diameter.
the outlet pipe for a16 is 1 11/16 for a16 and 1 13/16" for a 235,
The 235 exhaust manifold is larger and the exhaust pipe packing is larger. The rear tail pipe hanger fas a larger opening on the 235. All clamps are of a larger diameter. The 235 muffler is 2" lomger and the entire exhaust system for a 235 engine was made larger for the larger 235 engine.....as are the larger exhaust valves and larger carburetor.

Thanks, The muffler seemed to be the issue but the vendor was able to find one so there won't be a 8 week delay, I just wanted to get this done before I depart for Florida for the winter months.

The larger diameter pipes make sense, The smaller muffler is the puzzling part so I can only guess they engineered a smaller muffler to reduce back pressure on the smaller engine?

Does your information differ from the parts book I have to state that they are the same? Just wondering why there is a different OL length on the mufflers in the 3/1966 parts book

The older 1950 parts book lists the diameter of the inlet and outlet pipes but not the length.
My 1959 book lists the overall length but not the diameter of the pipes.

Does the 59 book says they are a different OL also?
